LED Lamp WIP 01

With school back in full swing and a wedding to attend there wasn't much time for projects but I did get some good ground work done in converting the old fluorescent desk lamp to an LED. I wired up three of the four as soon as I had them to test with a 1kΩ resistor to ensure I wouldn't burn them without a heat sink attached.

Battlebox reboot

Thank you for join me again. This week of break between quarters has been a good one for getting things done around the home, bicycling, reading, and old and new projects. Today I'll relate the restart of a make your own miniatures case battle box which I had collected some parts for years ago and only just recently purchased the rest of the materials.

Final Finale

Very little got done while I was in the throes of final exams but that is all over and I am getting back to the things I enjoy. I am happy to say I have a respirator for my family so several projects can begin to move forward. Just today we base coated a couple of my daughter's Eldar dire avengers which she gleefully painted up in shades of blue and purple.

One project I have really been wanting to get going on is the restoration and conversion of the engineering desk lamp. I have yet to receive my LEDs so I will move ahead with cleaning and painting the body until they do so look for that next week.

Other things coming up will be some airbrushing base coats on the long overdue Super Dungeon Explore miniatures. I picked up some of the metal minis back when the game was still in development. Now they have a really nice box set that is available with some nice unpainted plastic figurines.

I have to say I always prefer metal to resin or plastic but I know the cost of metal is always increasing where as plastics tend to stay cheaper.

Arcade dungeon crawling action. It's an intense hack-n-slash miniature style.

I also hope to get up the video of making the replacement parts with instant mold and J.B. Weld and making the dice box.

Thanks for joining me and until next time happy creating.

Find The Time

Tomorrow begins them wind down of our winter quarter with final exams. I have been studying for these upcoming exams and not gotten much done other than a few little things. Still my wife and I have been taking advantage of the lovely weather and studying outdoors. We rode our bikes over to a local café and had coffee in the shade outside. A wind had picked up and was causing the blossoms to fall upon us like snow. I managed to get a few pictures but only a few caught the tiny pastel petals as they came raining down.
Among the little things that I managed to find time for was some repairs done to the Type A Machine's 3D printer.

The waiting

Ultimately my goal is to have at least a blog post every Sunday and a video of a tutorial and highlights every other week. Since I do all my own filming, editing and uploading it is a bit much (for now) to get a video up every week. The whole reason I'm doing this is to practice with my skills and improve on them so that means I'm not going to just slap together some jumpy clips and bad transitions just to upload something.

With that insightful tid-bit we can venture forth into the work at hand.

Skills, what are they good for?

I've been working with miniatures for a long time now. I got into the hobby back when I found my father's painted set of white metal TSR AD&D miniatures. I remember the dusty smell of opening a box tucked away in the garage and the wonder at the small wooden box I found inside. The models were simple, a warrior, sorcerer, dwarf, etc. and the paint had been well worn from years of use and handling. I frequently spent a lot of time looking at them and wondering about their origin.

Years later I was introduced to Warhammer 40k and my imagination and interest in art were hooked into the hobby completely. I learned to modify, paint, dry brush, air brush, spray paint and all sorts of tricks. As time wore on I followed my interests all over the place from welding, sumi-e, photography and on and on. I also found that the little tricks I picked up on the way came in rather handy at times. I was restoring a motorcycle and was having a hard time acquiring a particular part so I took the old one (a thumb lever), drilled some holes, added some thick wire, J.B. weld and sculpted it into a duplicate of the original. A little primer and chrome paint and it was hard to tell I hadn't acquired an original part. Always little things like that which would be helpful, time saving or just fun. Just goes to show that you never know where a little skill, developed in an obscure place (in this case miniature gaming), can come in handy down the road. Opportunity is every where.

This week has been much like my interest in art, absolutely all over the place (more after the break).

The Beginning Again

Hello and welcome to my blog. I have many reasons for starting this so I'll skip that and get to business. Today I have started a project that I began many years ago. It is a cathedral set from the great team over at Armorcast which I purchased many, many, many years ago. So long ago that they don't seem to offer this kit anymore though you can still purchase all the parts to make your own. Actually I tell a lie because they don't seem to offer the roof pieces and I will inquire and post as to if those can be ordered.
